Teaching Religious Education is truly the work of many. Just over one hundred volunteers teach, coordinate a grade-level, assist, or substitute in our elementary religious education program. Some of them babysit for catechists’ children while the catechists teach the weekly lessons.
An hour of preparation precedes the approximately one-hour weekly class that is taught on each designated day. Specific, age-appropriate curricula are used at each grade-level. Catechists are trained and supported throughout the year.
We recognize the National Catechetical Directory and its guidelines for Religious Education. It states that parents are the first and foremost educators of their child’s faith. We, as a church, strive to support and supplement the endeavors of parents in this effort. To this end, materials and training are provided for parents at various points in our program. Our catechists strive to enhance and supplement the parents’ role, and add an important community and social dimension.
